The Sunset

Sabi ka ni Adriaan Kortlandt “Once I saw a chimpanzee gaze at a particularly beautiful sunset for a full 15 minutes, watching the changing colors [and then] retire to the forest without picking a pawpaw for supper.

Ai-Ai De las Alas at Marian Rivera ang Kung Fu Divas

Direk Onat, Ai-Ai, Marian and Edward for group selfie.

The Special Effect team and Direk Onat explaining the CGF.
The visual effects are quite extensive. We've done virtual sets and full computer graphic sets." and he added that "we've started this project since December of last year and January palang where doing the CGI na and it has been non-stop, can you imagine how extensive that was."

Makakasama sila Roderick Paulate, Gloria Diaz, Edward Mendez, Nova Villa, Roy Alvarez, Precious Lara Quigaman at Bianca Manalo.

YouTurn : Kelvin Dhel Ocampo

Full Name and Alias: Kelvin Dhel Ocampo (Dhel)
Twitter: idoodhel
Location: Manila
Age: 21
Education: B.S. Information Technology
Genre of your graphic illustration: Doodle Art

Tell me something about yourself that people don't know:
I'm Dhel, Currently a Graphic Artist at Global Alliance for Rabies Control and sidelining as freelance project manager for Maven, a multimedia team. We created a small team of talented individuals, tasked on different projects involving video production, 3D and 2D animation, photography and web&mobile applications. What people don't know about me is that I am addicted to TV Series. I often adjust my schedule just to have time to watch an episode. My Favorite Series includes Revolution, Under the Dome, Game of Thrones and Walking Dead (Hehe, Mostly Post-Apocalyptic type of series)

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
Currently I'm stuffed with work that I need to finish for the day. But nah, 10 minutes for this won't break the sched.

When and how did you get your start in the industry?
I started as a blogger and a doodle artist at my own blog which was named before as, after that I got exposed to different clients and offered me commissions on my designs, the next thing is that I'm hitting a huge break in a company wherein I get a job that I want, Until more projects came and I have to extend my resources so I created and manage a team.

Did you go to school to study this genre?
Yes and No. Basically Information Technology is a course wherein a broad knowledge about computers and digitalization is discussed. I learned my fundamentals in Web/Mobile Design and Development there, I also learned my fundamentals in Graphics Design there. And as a Student Leader, I had distributed those things that I learned inside and outside school by founding a Student Organization, namely Information Technology Students' Organization.

How did you discover your passion for art? Was it always something you knew you wanted to do?
I never did like art when I was little. I scribble a lot when I was in highschool, but that's just a thing for normal teenagers (wow, now I really feel old.) And I started on doodle art when I was actually blogging. When my friends saw my first doodle and convinced me to continue to do it. I learned my craft and I developed it. Until other things related to doodle art came to me like magic. That art had been a sudden interest now.

The Art Works of Kelvin Dhel Ocampo

How do you define graphic design?
Graphic Design for me, is a work of art that contradicts art. Kinda confusing? Yeah. Because for me. Graphic Design is an art that you do to make people understand what you want to say (unlike in art wherein you get to involve your audience in creating a feel on your work, or letting them have their own interpretation on your work).

How did you find your style? Has it changed since you started?
I found my style when I was doing my personal projects, seeing patterns and other things that I think originated from what I imagined. It started from patterns of swirls until it became a thing for me to create a patter of leaves until it became a thing for me to create abstract shapes for my artworks.

What was your first ever illustration of, do you still have it, if not where is it?
Yes. Still on my blog. My first ever doodle.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?
Internet, Network of Friends and from watching movies.

How did illustration/graphic design change your life?
It changed my life for it opens me to a new world. Wherein I get to express myself the way I wanted it to. Under my grounds and under my limits. It also changed my life for it offers me tons of opportunities. Opportunities that I didn't expect. Until now, even if I am on hiatus with my blog, I still has that connections that I created 2 to 3 years prior to what I am today.

What are the pros and cons of being a graphic illustrator?
Pros. I get to do what I love to do. Cons. I get to be scolded at times when I follow my own rules. Specially if I'm under a project and our concepts collide.

If you weren't a graphic artist/illustrator or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why?
I'm into the I.T. Field, Doing programs or websites for my company. Or be sitting on a 9-6 shift under network and server administration. Which also one of the things that I love to do.

What legacy will you leave?
A legacy for me is something that reminds people that I had left them something. At this point in time, I think I already left a legacy within my college. And that was to fight for the student's right as a Student Leader and President of the I.T. Students (Back in 2012). The legacy of telling students that what you do is not wrong and should not be subjected under a certain ground wherein fairness is not given. In terms of legacy on my design. I dunno, I guess being one of those people who created a trend on doodles?

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
Still under a Multimedia Field, already had my doctoral degree in Advertising. And a Professor at a University.

Your #1 art tip or words of wisdom.
Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life.

Any final message? Its your time to shine..
Besides for my tip or words of wisdom. I would just like to impart to the youth and the minds of adults that ideas are as golden as your values. Treasure your ideas. It serves as a spark for people who are eager to create things for the future.

Hot Spot : Chelsea Anne P. Bandong

Full Name and Alias: Chelsea Anne P. Bandong / C.A.
Location: Makati City
Age: 20 years young
Education: Far Eastern University – Manila, BS Nursing (Graduate)

Genre of your Photography: I’m not really limiting myself into a certain genre, but most of my shots fall on these categories--Night Photography, Landscape/Cityscape, Experimental/Conceptual

Tell me about yourself that people don't know: Two random things: Communication Arts was my first choice entering college. I’m a Registered Nurse.

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview? Looking at the glass half full.

How did you get started in photography? A quick timeline: The interest started with my Phone camera (2007 or so) then transitioned into Point-and-Shoot (2010, where I learned the basics of taking shots)

Did you go to school to study photography? Nope. But maybe someday.

What camera did you use? GEX5 (P&S) & Canon 1100D

How would you characterize the style of your photography? Freezing moments and sights there is :D

Can you share with us some recent images? And what's the story behind it?

The Trees at Bonifacio Global City, May 2013. This was taken during a night photowalk with my bestbud. A breather from my hectic review days.

#ScrapPork l Million People March, August 2013. I made my voice against the screwed up Pork Barrel system be heard.

Who or what influenced you to become a photographer? My first ever long exposure shot triggered my taste for clicking the shutter.

How did you become a photographer? And when did your career start as a professional photographer? If it’s the getting-to-be-serious take on photography we’re talking about, it all started during the last quarter of 2011. The time I decided to explore my point-and-shoot further. PRO is one big word for me, I’m not even close to it I guess. Having due respect to those who really are.

What makes a good photographer in your opinion? Open-minded and Assertive. Some decisive moments may only last for a split-second.

Which one item of equipment would you say is the most important to you? Of course The Camera + Lens would come first. So the second would be--considering my love for night shots--my Tripod.

What is the most rewarding part of photography? The magnanimous inspiration and story every shot brings.

What is your most embarrassing experience as a photographer? Maybe it would be the first “BAWAL MAGSHOOT DITO” reprimand I got from an Ayala guard.

How photography change your life? It challenges the creative side of me, ergo, letting me go outside the box to explore the world around me and discover new perspectives.

I know you been working with some of the famous and influential people in the country but may I ask whom do you wish/dream to work with and Why? The President (may it be P-Noy or whoever will take his place in the future), Miriam Defensor Santiago and Eleandre Basino Buendia.

What tips can you give to someone aspiring to be a professional photographer? The best way to learn is to expose one’s self in reality. Reading materials would help but on-the-go experience will always be the x-factor.

What are the best tools for a beginner to learn on (besides the camera)? Manual (yep, yep, hooray!) Photography-related reads or photo blogs of the genre they want to specialize in.

What is your favorite recent image you have shot recently? Can you describe its creation in regards to location, lighting, composition, and camera settings etc, also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?

”Kidlat” (2013) photographed with Canon 1100D. It was hard shooting this sight using my point-and-shoot back then. I’ve always wanted to photograph one; fortunately, I got three on the first try. Just geared up with my tripod at our veranda, adjusted the setting to Manual: f/25 30” ISO400 + right timing and a bucket of patience.

What are the pros and cons of being a photographer? Please be specific.
PROS: You have that unique connection with the subject of your choice first-hand and raw.
CONS: Group shots and events, you’ll be the one taking them for about 90% of the time so missing them is quite inevitable.

I know you like traveling for shoot or even for chill-out, can tell me where is the best place to be to do some shoot? And why there? Bonifacio Global City. Cozy, balanced take of the nature, urban vibe and art!

Here some of the photos taken by Chelsea Bantong exclusive for axlppi.

What goal are you working towards within your photography and when will you know you have reached it? Have a momentous photo taken that could inspire or move people’s emotions. Only time can tell. It may be a larger than life goal but who knows. :P

What photographic organizations do you belong to? Jaywalkers Philippines, ClickersPH and ShutterbugsPH

Name a photographer you would like to take a portrait of? Francisco Guerrero and Kurt Kamka. They are my idols.

If you weren't a photographer or a multimedia artist, what would you want to be? Why? I want to be a Military Nurse.. or a Surgeon! Just because it’s related with the course I took up 

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now? Legit Military Nurse and a part time professional photographer, living with my family in a dream house I built with sweat and blood.

What legacy you will leave on? I wish I had a vivid outlook of my future but I wouldn’t want to spoil myself so maybe in five or ten year’s time, I could have a sneak peek answer to this question.

Any final message or you want to thanks, go on it’s your time to shine!!
Thanks for this fantastic interview, Axl. And here goes my Shameless promotion: I’m Chels. For inquiries, collaborations, or sponsorship, you can contact me at:  Cheers!

Lorenzo, the musical play that capture your soul

So paano kita-kits tayo dito ha, dahil baka manood ulit ako!

Ibalong the musical, the repeat
